DLT Registration – A Complete Guide

DLT Registration – A Complete Guide

What is DLT Registration?

DLT (Distributed Ledger Technology) registration is a mandatory process introduced by TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) to regulate and prevent spam in SMS and voice communications. It ensures transparency and authenticity in commercial communication by tracking the sender, content, and recipient.

Businesses or entities that want to send bulk SMS or voice messages for promotional or transactional purposes must register themselves with a telecom operator’s DLT platform.

Why is DLT Registration Important?

  • Compliance with TRAI regulations
  • 📩 Improves SMS delivery rate
  • 🔐 Prevents SMS fraud and spam
  • 🧾 Ensures brand authenticity
  • 📊 Provides detailed reporting and tracking

Who Needs DLT Registration?

If your organization sends bulk SMS for marketing, alerts, OTPs, reminders, or updates, you must register on a DLT platform. This includes:

  • Businesses (small to large)
  • Educational institutions
  • E-commerce platforms
  • Banks and financial institutions
  • Healthcare providers
  • Government agencies

DLT Registration Process

Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of the process:

Step 1: Choose a Telecom Operator

Select any telecom operator’s DLT platform to register (e.g., Jio, Airtel, Vodafone Idea, BSNL, etc.). Registration with one operator is enough; the data is shared across all networks.

Step 2: Entity Registration

  • Visit the DLT portal of the chosen telecom operator.
  • Fill out the Entity Registration Form with:
    • Business name
    • PAN details
    • Authorized contact person
    • Business type and address
  • Upload mandatory documents:
    • PAN card
    • Proof of identity/address (Aadhaar, GST, Certificate of Incorporation, etc.)

✅ Once verified, you’ll receive a Unique Entity ID.

Step 3: Header (Sender ID) Registration

Register your Sender ID (also known as Header) — this is the name that appears when you send SMS (e.g., “AM-SAMTEC”).

  • Promotional headers are numeric (e.g., 565XXX)
  • Transactional/service headers are alphabetic (e.g., AX-SAMTEC)

📝 Approval may take 24–48 hours.

Step 4: Template Registration

Register your SMS content templates (for both transactional and promotional messages).

Each template must match the exact format you intend to use.

  • Example: “Dear Customer, your OTP is {#var#}. Do not share it with anyone.”

🔐 This ensures the message content isn’t altered and protects recipients from fraud.

Step 5: Telemarketer Integration (Optional)

If you’re using a bulk SMS provider (telemarketer), link their details to your DLT profile. This step enables seamless SMS delivery through authorized routes.
